This bottle, tasted at the cellars in Reims, was among the best I've encountered to date; but between the chiseled muscularity of the Clos du Mesnil and the complexity and plenitude of the 164ème Édition of Grande Cuvée, the vintage itself simply seems less compelling and complete. Offering up aromas of citrus oil, freshly baked bread, orange zest, dried white flowers and a discreet hint of buttered toast, it's medium to full-bodied, racy and saline, with a pretty pinpoint mousse and a tightly wound core. Will it unfurl with time to reveal more mid-palate volume and authority, or will it remain a comparatively lean, understated vintage for Krug? As ever, time will tell, and given the house's track record I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see the 2008 take flight with more time on cork.

Chef de Caves Julie Cavil and I sat down to taste the newly released 2008 Clos du Mesnil—alongside the 2008 vintage and 2008-base Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition—at the house's cellars in Reims last week. At the same time, Krug's 2021-base Grande Cuvée, the future 177ème Édition, was in tirage, a reminder of how slowly time passes in Champagne. Located in the Champagne region of northeastern France, it was founded in 1843 by German-born Johann-Joseph Krug. His dream was to create the best of the best Champagne that could be released every year regardless of annual climate variations - a dream that has clearly been realized to this day. Joseph Krug's philosophy was not to divide the house's Champagnes into hierarchies, a mindset Krug maintains today. The house offers seven different Champagnes, each with its own distinct expression, without being divided into specific hierarchies. Instead, it's the quantity of the Champagne that determines pricing.Regarding the Krug 2006 Brut vintage champagne specifically:

Composition: 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, and 20% Pinot Meunier.

Aroma profile: Includes citrus fruits, stone fruits, floral notes, nuts, honey, marzipan, brioche, and pastry.

Palate characteristics: Full-bodied, intense, with vibrant acidity, creamy texture, and a long, persistent finish.

Aging potential: Expected to develop well over the next 20-30 years.

Vintage characteristics: The 2006 vintage is described as generous, emphatic, and energetic, reflecting a year of climatic contrasts.

Ratings: Highly rated by critics, including 100 points from James Suckling.

The Krug 2006 Brut is praised for its complexity, balance, and potential for long-term aging, exemplifying Krug's commitment to producing exceptional, unique vintage champagnes.

General information

Krug, established in 1843 in Reims, France, stands as one of the most prestigious Champagne houses in the world. Medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, it's a tauter, more chiseled rendition of Grande Cuvée by comparison with the richer, more textural and more demonstrative 168ème Édition (based on the 2012 vintage) that preceded it; but its bright spine of acidity is nicely cloaked in fruit. Even with all of its energy, the 169 balances the vibrancy of the late-ripening 2013 vintage it is built on, with the depth that the reserve wines added to the blend. The 169 drinks well now but clearly has the potential to age. The 169 is a blend of 146 separate wines back to 2000. Krug ID: 120003. Dosage is low, at 2 grams per litre, which also helps emphasise sleek lines. For my palate, the 2018 is a bit too stark, too austere, but it makes up for that to some extent with its persistence. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

William Kelly, Robert Parker, March 2019 - 97+P

Bollinger's 2008 La Grande Année is superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, ripe lemons, honeycomb, warm biscuits, dried white flowers and a delicate top note of walnuts and fino sherry. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a beautifully refined mousse, superb concentration at the tightly wound core, incisive acids and a supremely elegant intermingling of Bollinger's oxidative stylistic signatures with fresh, vibrant fruit. The finish is long, precise and chalky. This is a Grande Année built for the cellar—the real excitement will come with a bit more bottle age—but this is already a thrilling Champagne in the making. Finished with eight grams per liter dosage, it was disgorged by hand in July 2018. This is also the first vintage of Grande Année to be bottled in Bollinger's new narrower-necked 1846 bottle, which should make for a slower evolving wine.

Bollinger's just-released 2008 Grande Année was unquestionably one of the highlights of my tastings for my upcoming Champagne report (to be published at the end of April 2019), and I can't recommend it warmly enough. This is the most exciting Grande Année for quite some time, the house's powerful, Pinot Noir-driven and gently oxidative style synergizing to great effect with this ripe but incisive vintage. Readers will be familiar with the rudiments of the Bollinger's winemaking—fermentation in old barrels, sur lattes maturation on natural cork and manual riddling and disgorgement—but I will be going into greater detail, as well as looking back at the house's evolution over the last few decades, in a more extensive article later this year.

Antonio Galloni, Vineous, March 2024 - 97P:

Bollinger's 2008 Grande Année is rich, ample and full-bodied, with all of the pedigree of the vintage on display. Dried pear, dried flowers, chamomile, red plum and mint develop as the 2008 shows the breadth and creaminess that are such signatures of the Bollinger house style. A whole range of brighter, more floral and chalky notes appear later, adding translucence and energy. The 2008 is 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay taken across 18 crus, and it is the Pinot that very much informs the wine in both flavor and texture. More importantly, the 2008 is one of the best Grande Années I can remember tasting. Bollinger fans won't want to miss it. Disgorged November 2018.
