Sporting a retro but classic personality, the Marchesi Antinori 2018 Tignanello is quite the dapper and jovial wine that hits the market just as much of the world is emerging from a dark chapter of lockdowns and coronavirus curfews. I love the optimism that springs bright with such clarity and detail from within this blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2016 vintage was a benchmark for sure, but I prefer the 2018, thanks to that tinge of nostalgia or emotion that is so deftly rendered in this cool, long growing season. The 2018 vintage offers a deconstructed Tignanello upon first inspection because you can clearly make out the varietal typicity of the grapes, especially the green spice and white pepper of the two Cabernets, along with aromas of crushed limestone that recall the white rocks carefully placed in the vineyards to protect the rows. The wine's fruit weight is contained and polished, and there are no exaggerations, excesses or loose ends. The results are calculated and exacting, especially if you consider the tannic management (with aging in both new and used Hungarian and French oak for up to 16 months) and the quality of the elegant mouthfeel. With time in the glass, those deconstructed elements converge to create unity and balance. The Tignanello vineyard is 57 hectares and sits at a breezy 390 meters above sea level with alberese and galestro soils. Those elevations proved important for shedding excess humidity at the end of this 2018 growing season. Production for this excellent wine is an impressive 345,000 bottles.

“Progress counted in centimeters is much harder to achieve than progress counted in meters.” This is the wisdom offered by Marchesi Antinori General Manager Renzo Cotarella at the end of a virtual meeting to discuss the wines presented in this Spotlight.

Together, we discussed the 2018 Tignanello, the 2018 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso and the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne among others. As readers may know, I find the term "super Tuscan" off target and out of date, and I do everything I can to avoid it. However, I have not yet thought of a suitable alternative name for this catchall category of blended reds from Tuscany, including Tignanello, Sassicaia and Ornellaia, that revolutionized Italian wine and changed its destiny. Last year, the series was named “The Tuscan Ten,” but that was too tight a fit given the many gorgeous wines I wanted to highlight, so this year I have doubled my aspiration and morphed the concept into “The Tuscan Twenty.”

This article features reviews of the latest 2018 Tignanello and other wines from the Chianti Classico appellation. The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori sources its fruit from the family’s Tenuta Tignanello property. Other wines represent sites from various spots within the Chianti Classico appellation or greater Tuscany. I also reviewed the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne and have included some exciting details that we can expect to see from this southern Tuscan property in the coming years.

This Spotlight includes a review of the 2018 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot from the Tuscan Coast. A shift to underline the Cabernet Franc is underway, and this vintage definitely cements that trend. The popular 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Il Bruciato on the market now was previously reviewed and you can find it in our database.

Throughout this tasting, one wine emerged taller than the rest. The 2018 Tignanello is a beautiful creation and a wine that I discovered to be especially fascinating. In fact, I preferred the 2018 edition (that I scored 98 points) to the more hyped 2016 Tignanello (that I scored one point less). The wines are equals in terms of sheer magnitude and quality, but the 2018 vintage, born from a sometimes challenging growing season, ultimately evokes greater surprise and emotion. It showcases tight and linear elegance with old-fashioned stitching and tailoring.

The 2018 season saw rains in the period immediately before harvest, but the hills, Chianti’s soil profile and elevations of the vines at 350 to 400 meters above sea level all helped to drain excess moisture away from the roots. Renzo Cotarella tells me that farming in 2018 was far easier in Chianti Classico than it was in the flatter areas of Bolgheri, where heavier soils captured the rainwater. Hilly vineyards make a big difference in the 2018 Tignanello, as do the subtle changes to the wine’s oak regime. A move to include Burgundy coopers has changed the tannic dimension of the wine and has shaped elegant and gentle oak tannins.

Thanks to slow progress calculated centimeter by centimeter, the 2018 Tignanello hits all the right marks, considering also the context of these trying times.

Monica Larner, Robert Parker, Sept. 2021, 97P:

The Bruno Giacosa 2016 Barolo Falletto (white label) brings us another extraordinary expression from a classic vintage. I have tasted the wine multiple times from barrel and three times from bottle and never been anything less than blown away. The 2004 is a subtle, layered Monfortino that captures the sheer elegance and finesse of this great vintage. It is sweet, perfumed, silky and utterly mind-blowing. From barrel it has always been a 100 point wine, but it has just been bottled and naturally a bit closed in on itself. Still, with some time in the glass its silky, perfumed fruit and dazzling class come to life. The 2004 is remarkably harmonious for such a young wine. Readers will have much fun debating which is the greatest Monfortino of recent years. Could it be the 1996, 1999 or 2002 for their huge structure and classicism? Or, is it the 1997 for its opulence? What if the dark horse 1998 and 2000 steal the show? Personally, I adore the 2001 and 2004 for their completeness, but the 2004 is the sexiest of them all. Sadly, 2004 is also the year Giovanni Conterno passed away, but one can’t escape the feeling his spirit lives in this wine. Kudos to Roberto Conterno and his team for this magnificent, thrilling Barolo. Peering across the valley over the hillside where the Conterno winery sits, the observant eye will notice a number of large barrels outside the main building. Roberto Conterno had no choice but to replace a number of his casks this year as the staves had begun to bend from many years of use, and Conterno was understandably afraid of the unthinkable, that the casks could finally yield to old age full of wine. Still, he was clearly upset by having to replace barrels that he personally moved into the new winery with his father during the summer of 1985. Just to think of the wines that were racked during that move. The 1978, 1979 and 1982 Monfortini were still in cask. To be honest, seeing the empty space in the winery as the new casks were about to arrive was quite a shock. The wines, however, were not. I tasted all of the wines currently in cask plus the new releases from bottle. My high expectations were easily surpassed. Conterno fans have a lot to look forward to. Roberto Conterno has decided to give his new Nebbiolo from the Cerretta vineyard another year in barrel. At the moment Conterno is leaning towards releasing the 2009 as a Langhe Nebbiolo rather than Barolo, although that could always change. I tasted this wine several times during the course of its creation in both barrel and bottle, and the highly deserved 100-point score you see here was enthusiastically assigned at the conclusion of a mini vertical in which I tasted and compared the 2016 vintage against 2015 (which I scored 97 points). It makes perfect sense to present these two excellent vintages in back-to-back comparison fashion because they are two of the best to emerge from Bolgheri, and indeed Tenuta San Guido, in recent memory. These are very similar vintages with long, hot summer months that fueled a long growing season. There was a bit more rain in 2016, and in analytical terms this vintage has a tad more acidity. However, the results in the glass are extraordinarily different. The 2015 vintage is exuberant, round, succulent and immediate, whereas the 2016 vintage shows pinpoint sharpness and precision (with similar grit and texture at the back). That acidity will carry it long into the future as the wine completes its slow evolutionary course. This wine is chiseled and sharp with blackberry, ripe cherry, grilled herb and barbecue spice. The aromas flow from the glass in a continuous stream and are all marked by radiant intensity. The mouthfeel is long and powerful. The crisp linearity of the wine's tannic backbone is perfectly measured to the volume and depth of the fruit flavors. To my mind, the 2016 Sassicaia stands tall next to the epic 1985 vintage that set the ultimate benchmark for vino italiano.

SASSICAIA NOTES:

SOIL STYLE

The soils on which the vineyards stand has varied and complex terrain features with a strong presence of limestone, feature areas rich in marl and pebbles as well as being partly clayey. The autumn was characterised by unusually warm and dry weather, except for a few rare downpours. The real winter arrived at the end of November with cold temperatures that remained low both during the day and at night until the end of January. February, on the other hand, was more of a wet month with a slight rise in temperatures. The rains were indispensable to guarantee the water reserve in the subsoil and to ensure that the plants could face the summer period without problems. At the beginning of April, the sharp rise in temperatures led to an anticipated budding of the vines of around 8-10 days, but the real arrival of summer took place with the second half of June, when rainfall and somewhat damp weather gave way to beautiful sunny days and summer temperatures, which, however, apart from the second ten days of July, always remained at seasonal levels without excesses. A few night showers in August offered coolness to the vines and washed the grapes, while the cool night breezes, conditioned by the sea, accentuated the development of aromas and ensured freshness and fragrance in the grapes, which ripened gradually, without excess sugar, in a harvest that was possible, thanks to optimal conditions, to last until the first ten days of October.

HARVESTING

Harvesting, carried out strictly by hand, began in the first ten days of September with the Cabernet Franc grapes, followed by the Sauvignon grapes, and was completed on 10 October with the grapes from the Castiglioncello vineyards, located at an altitude of over 300 metres above sea level. The Tenuta San Guido 2018 Bolgheri Sassicaia lays out a familiar blueprint that borrows from the proven track record of this landmark estate that extends into the hills just beyond the Tyrrhenian shores of Tuscany. This vintage is crystalline and pure in its delivery, and if you are familiar with previous editions, it is impossible to mistake this wine for anything but Sassicaia. The growing season started off cool and wet but turned to warm and dry conditions comfortably before the harvest. Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc in a supporting role deliver a graceful mid-weight texture that holds back style-wise in terms of phenolic density. The wine's careful balance is achieved thanks to the nuanced character of the fruit, the present acidity, the well-managed structure and the contained alcohol. The palate is lifted and bright, the finish is polished and long, and the wine skips over any heaviness on the mid-palate. The bouquet is especially intriguing with a very lively plummy fruit element that is enhanced by baker's chocolate, pepper spice, iron ore, caramel and pie crust. There is also a green character that adds positively to the bouquet with aniseed, tea leaf, soya, menthol rub and black olive. The fruit maturity is spot-on with no elements that feel over or underripe. Overall, the 2018 Sassicaia weighs in with a svelte frame and long persistence. Moreover, it is distinguished by the archetypal elegance and pedigree of the classic vintages of the past. This new release gives you much pleasure to await.

Tuscany’s Viale dei Cipressi (the road of the cypresses) is easily overlooked in a region packed with monuments of cultural importance and sites of natural wonder. Yet, a drive down the five-kilometer road flanked by 2,400 tightly lined cypress trees, so tall and abundant thanks to their considerable age, is always a stirring experience.

The road, officially classified as strada provinciale 16d SP 39-Bolgheri, is ribboned with undulating waves and dips in the pavement that you feel at the bottom of your stomach if traveling at the right speed. Flashes of sunlight peek through the wispy tips of the cypresses, and quick snapshots of the beautiful countryside appear between some of the larger gaps between the trees. The road links the Bolgheri castle and sleepy town center to the tiny Oratorio di San Guido chapel that is also walled in with cypresses along its octagonal perimeter. This is where the strada provincial intersects, with precise perpendicularity, the Via Aurelia, or the Roman Aurelian Way that has served as an artery of commerce and communication between Rome and France since antiquity.

The Viale dei Cipressi is one of those quintessential experiences in which the journey, even if only briefly, outweighs the destination. And, in these times of magical thinking in which so much strife and suffering surrounds us, there is comfort to be found in metaphors. The passageway, such as this magnificent road surrounded by its majestic trees, takes on special significance in these trying times.

A passage is a symbol of life and the many milestones accrued along the way. It feels especially fitting to consider the Viale dei Cipressi on this year as Tenuta San Guido, the celebrated wine estate named after the Oratorio di San Guido with its winery located at the western end of the cypress-lined road, celebrates the 50th vintage of its legendary wine Sassicaia.

Seen with a wider lens, the Viale dei Cipressi could represent the long road traveled by modern Italian wine and the forward trajectory of an enological identity that starts here, with a world-celebrated bottle made under the shadows of those proud trees. As I am often reminded: Sassicaia is the father of all vino italiano.

The first commercial vintage of Sassicaia was 1968, and the current release (reviewed here) is 2018. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (usually played out in an 85/15 ratio) is named after the stones, or “sassi” in Italian, found in the historic vineyards located at the eastern end of the Viale dei Cipressi. Indeed, the entire production of Sassicaia from grape to bottle is mapped out along Bolgheri’s five kilometers of asphalt, from one end to the other.

“The 2018 vintage confirms how the number eight brings good luck to Tenuta San Guido,” says General Manager Carlo Paoli. “The 2018 vintage shows a consistent link to 2008, 1998, 1988 and, of course, the 1968 vintage that marks Sassicaia’s debut on the market.” He adds that “the seasonal trend of 2018 was truly perfect and paid the best homage to Mario and Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta on such an important anniversary as this 50-year celebration.”

The Tenuta San Guido 2018 Bolgheri Sassicaia is an exciting and reassuring wine that brought a very happy smile to my face. I found the bouquet and the mouthfeel to be something of a homecoming or a return to the classic philosophy of the estate. In many ways, 2018 represents a stylistic intersection or convergence of the two previous vintages. The wine offers the precision and elegance of 2016 (which I scored 100 points) and the more cautious or tapered 2017 vintage (which I scored 94 points). I awarded the 2018 vintage a score of 97+, with an emphasis on the plus sign to underline the future aging potential of this bottle.

The Tenuta San Guido estate covers 2,500 acres of land with vineyards, equestrian paddocks and forests teaming with wild boar and other wildlife alongside brambly Mediterranean shrub oaks. The historic Sassicaia vineyard (originally measuring just two hectares) was planted in 1942, but the estate holdings grew in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, there are 97 hectares of vines, and most of the fruit is sourced from the Castiglioncello, Quercione and Doccino parcels. The Bolgheri appellation is celebrated for its rich soil diversity, and Sassicaia is drawn from sites with silt, clay, sand, gravel and alluvial deposits. A high presence of iron and manganese is reflected in the slightly mineral character of the bouquet.

The original blueprint for Sassicaia was created by Mario Incisa della Rochetta and Giacomo Tachis, and not much has changed over these 50 years. Fermentations are not especially long in stainless steel with frequent délestages and pump-overs. It ages for two years in Allier and Tronçais oak with medium toast and long seasoning. About a third of the barrique are third or fourth passage, adding to the careful integration of the tannins.

The 2018 growing season saw abundant rains between spring and summer, making for a challenging start. Those frequent rains and humidity alternated with sunny days and warm temperatures created the perfect conditions for fungal diseases. Many vintners in the Bolgheri appellation dedicated extra labor hours to managing this situation by tending to the canopy and eliminating weeds. Vineyard sites with looser soils and more stones proved well-draining and gave some of the best results. The season proved considerably warmer and drier in the final weeks before harvest, and this accelerated the ripening. However, the harvest came a bit later in 2018 as a result of the delays earlier in the year. At Tenuta San Guido, grapes were harvested two weeks later than average, and the excellent quality of the fruit was never compromised. To summarize, 2018 started off as a cool vintage but ended as a warm one.

“The Cabernet Sauvignon, and especially the grapes from the older vines on the highest hills in Castiglioncello di Bolgheri, reached a perfect balance in terms of ripeness,” says Carlo Paoli. Thanks to these conditions, Sassicaia celebrates its 50th vintage with the classic 2018 vintage. This is textbook Sassicaia, a wine with an infinitely complex bouquet, elegant phenolic weight, balanced acidity, moderate alcohol content (with a real value of 13.35% and 13.5% recorded on the label) and a great deal of potential for cellar aging.

Happy Birthday Sassicaia!

SASSICAIA NOTES:

SOIL STYLE

The soils on which the vineyards stand has varied and complex terrain features with a strong presence of limestone, feature areas rich in marl and pebbles as well as being partly clayey. Autumn and early winter were characterised by temperatures above the seasonal norm with occasional rainfall, sometimes in the form of floods. This situation continued until February, with more intense rainfall and some snowfall at higher altitudes. What radically changed the situation was 'Burian' from Siberia, which in the last week of February caused temperatures to plummet to well below zero, with Bolgheri experiencing some snowfall. From an agronomic point of view, it was excellent, bringing about vegetative halt and eliminating vine parasites, and replenishing water reserves. From March, temperatures tended to rise again, but soon after a further wave of frost affected the whole of Italy and in particular, the Tuscan coast, characterising a March and early April with temperatures below the seasonal average and rain. From the second ten days of April, spring arrived with rising temperatures and sunny days. May began with rainy and windy days. Throughout the entire spring period until late summer, temperatures remained normal, without excessive heat and with occasional rainfall that favoured the phenological phases of flowering and fruit development perfectly. It was only in July that the heat became intense, albeit with good night-time ventilation, and this situation continued until before the August bank holiday, because from 14 August a downpour of heavy rain brought coolness to the vines and normalised the temperatures. Sunny days, cool temperatures (especially at night) and the absence of sea breezes meant that the phenolic ripening of the grapes was excellent, with the aromas and acidity developing well.

The 2018 vintage saw alternating periods of wet cold and extreme heat, but the 2019 season was far more harmonious and gradual in terms of climate. Spring came a little early and, from mid-March, the beautiful sunny days and the consistent rise in temperatures anticipated the growth of the buds. However, in April the weather changed again with a substantial drop in temperatures and the return of rain. The entire month of April was very rainy, and this situation stabilised the water reserve of the soils. The continuation of spring was rather unusual with rainfall and cold temperatures also affected by tramontana winds. From the end of May, the weather improved, and from June, summer arrived with sunny days, normal temperatures and excellent ventilation (particularly at night).
The end of June recorded intense temperatures, but fortunately this sweltering heat only lasted for a short time, with the continuation of summer stabilising at temperatures well within the seasonal average. July and August were hot months, but still with temperatures within the norm, without any excesses, except for the last week of July where the muggy heat persisted for about a week.
