The palate has a delicious orange cream, lemon curd, white pepper, pink grapefruit and loads of lemony herbs. Delicious and lingering on the palate, this is a lovely Chardonnay.

Antonio Galloni, Vineous, January 2026 - 95P:

The 2024 Chardonnay The Zellerbach Selection is fascinating to taste next to the De Brye. This was made from vines planted in 1998 and 2008, vinified in tank with full malolactic fermentation and a short aging of six months in barrel. Not surprisingly, Zellerbach offers quite a bit more textural richness than its sibling. Apricot, exotic white flowers, mint, tangerine peel and a kiss of French oak all build with a bit of time in the glass. What a gorgeous wine this is.

Despite a brilliant track record that goes back to the 1950s, Hanzell remains very much under the radar. That’s a shame, because these are some of the most profound wines being made anywhere in California today. Jason Jardine oversees farming and winemaking with a holistic approach that starts with natural inputs in the vineyard, as I was able to see firsthand during my most recent visit. Hanzell exists like a tiny ecosystem, a small bucolic ranch where vines share space with a wide range of crops and animals. Views of Sonoma Valley below and San Francisco off in the distance are reminders of the outside world, but it is very easy to visit Hanzell and forget all of that. Winemaking is stripped down to the basics.

Hanzell’s 2023s are magnificent. The long, cool growing season presented ideal conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both of which offer a compelling mix of lifted aromatics, intense flavors and plenty of supporting structure. Quite simply, these are among the purest, most site-driven wines readers will find in all of California. In addition to their core range, Hanzell also releases small bottlings of experimental and/or single-block estate wines under their Hanzell Farm sister label.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0706/9273/3194/files/2024_Farm_Zellerbach_Chardonnay__Front.jpg?v=1791120924
